Boerewors
Boerewors is a traditional South African sausage, known for its distinctive flavour and texture. The name "boerewors" comes from Afrikaans, where "boer" means farmer and "wors" means sausage, so it's literally "farmer's sausage." It's typically made from coarsely ground beef, mixed with pork, and seasoned with a blend of spices such as coriander, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and vinegar.
The sausage is formed into a spiral shape, though it can also be made in links. It’s known for its juicy, rich flavour and is often cooked on a braai (barbecue), where the fat renders out, creating a crispy exterior and tender interior. It’s a popular dish in South Africa, enjoyed as a main meal, often served with bread rolls, salads, or with traditional sides like pap (maize meal porridge). It's a real crowd-pleaser!
