The tale goes that in the 17th century, King James I of England was so impressed by a particularly tasty cut of beef that he knighted it on the spot—declaring it “Sir Loin.” 

Great story… but only a myth.

The real origin is much less dramatic (and much more French):

The name comes from the old French word “surlonge”

“sur” = above  +  “longe” = loin

So “sirloin” basically just means “the upper part of the loin”—a nice, tender cut near the back of the animal.

People love a good memorable royal story and honestly, our sirloin is good enough to deserve a knighthood
